New Horizon Foundation Annual Report (1998-1999)

PURPOSE

The New Horizon Foundation was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in Illinois in December 1985. The Foundation is interested in developing and funding direct and indirect programs in which it can encourage interest and foster education in the arts and sciences. The Foundation also funds projects concerned with issues in human rights, social welfare, and global security.

The foundation does not invite unsolicited proposals for funding.

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITY FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 9/1/98-8/31/99

Support and Revenue
Capital at the beginning of the fiscal year consisted primarily of equities and federal notes and bills with an approximate market value of $5,163,737, cash and accrued interest at $15,481, for total assets of $5,179,218. During the fiscal year, dividends received were $56,305 and interest income received was $127,801. Capital gains amounted to $433,960.

Expenses

Total expenses were $629,970. Of this amount, $572,234 was given in indirect grants or contributions, and $57,736 was spent in administration.

Indirect Grants and Contributions

New Horizon Foundation contributions and grants were made to a variety of local and national educational, social, and cultural institutions. Of these, $317,470 went to cultural and civic activities, $126,914 to educational institutions, $50,550 to educational foundations and other nonprofit educational funds, $39,900 to social/educational programs, and $37,400 to charitable organizations.

Operating Expenses Investments were managed at Bank of America, Chicago, Illinois. Total investment expenses were $35,088. Legal work associated with advising the Foundation was done by the firm of Sachnoff and Weaver, Ltd. of Chicago, Illinois. Legal fees of $799 mainly reflect reviewing the annual report and advice about fund management. Accounting was done by American Express Tax and Business Services, Inc. of Chicago, Illinois. Accounting fees were $2,580. The secretary/treasurer was paid a salary of $10,000. All other officers served without compensation.
